Hi Alex -
Mechanic and Napoeon are spot on. After buying the 1988 wifemobile, I checked it out and found the same missing thermostat, and it had gotten ALL its service from the original selling dealer (there's a message here). I put in the 92C thermostat, car ran at 9:00 temp, and gas mileage went up 12% (from 16 to 18).
Put in the one you found, make a not of the temp - it should be marked on it. Be sure the gasket is good. You may want to use a tiny amount of Perma-Tex Form-A-Gasket to be sure. I have always had to remove the hose from the housing, and then thread a string through it to pull the thermostat tight into the housing while installing - otherwise the @#$% thing slips out of place.
Oh, and if you use a razor blade scraper to clean up the gasket surface, remember that the razor blade can cut into the softer aluminum of the head.
Good Luck,
Bob
