AC Why is 134a the standard.???????

My real question, though, is, if we have to have an alternative to R12 , why is everyone so gung ho for 134. There seems to be a partiality to 134, when there are other refrigerants available. Why?

I just read something about a Dupont monopoly. I wonder if theres anything to this? I know conspiracy theories are ten cent a dozen, but...
