If your car in 1984 or older, with the York compresssor, the shaft seal replacement can be a DIY job. BTDT, but B4 the new EPA stranglehold on R12. If you have the rotary compressor, the shaft seal is a bigger deal. A salvage yard may have a good one, but caveat emptor.
If the system must be opened up, the new O-rings can be DIY, as can the receiver/dryer and compressor. If you go to RS134a, I think the EPA will let you buy the refrigerant and gauges, and you can rent a vacuum pump. Check www.swedishengineerng.com and www.hancockindustries.com and www.ackits.com and aapak.com and www;fpcgroton.com for sources and prices. Consider a condensor made for RS134, you'll get better cooling. Also find an electric pusher fan.
Run the dollars, and value your skills, and evaluate the risk of being self-warranteed. (you can't yell at yourself if it comes out wrong)
Good Luck,
Bob
