It can...but the coil is right there under the hood, you can run a wire right though the firewall. All you need is a spade connector, if you do it at the ECU, it can be tricky with all of the pins, and to do it right you would have to solder a wire to a pin or use a piggy back connector, which can breaks the insulation on the wire. The negative side of the coil is the BEST place to take the rpm signal.
