I'm not sure if they were on every year 740 in the same place, but on my 1990 745Ti, the OBD terminal in under the hood, aft of the driver side strut tower. It's a little black box with a wire looping out of it(and back in...). Take the cover off, and there's the simplest diagnostic tool (too use) you can find. One wire, 6 (I think) terminals, one button and one light. Best of luck, I'm curious to find out what's plaguing you as I'm having similar issues.
