Check the obvious:
-coolant leaks into tranny fluid
-shifter linkage out of adjustment

then make a "fix or buy" decision. If the tranny has suffered from a coolant leak, scrap it and buy a used unit. A rebuild of the existing unit will cost somewhere around $900 (at least around here in Iowa).
