Here is my guess.
You may have a sensor in the lower radiator hose. In my 84 turbo it came stock
with an adapter sleeve in the lower radiator hose which has the sensor in it
to trigger the fan. Thus the sensor spot stayed bare on the radiator. Check
your hose and see what you have.
