You didn't say what year car. If it has the old biodegradable wiring, it could be dead short. I'm currently replacing the timing belt in my '87 740 and found all of the insulation gone from the point where it enters the first gromet in front the the motor all the way to the sensor. One of my jobs tomorrow is to splice in new wire.
