164E heating 140-160 1975

Reply to JohnMc. One of the local independent Volvo shops suggested it could be a loose water pump impeller.

Actually, I'm not sure it is overheating, even though the 164E was supposed to have run hot. I'm not sure it's not both an inaccurate gauge/sensor as well as running hot too.

If I start the car and idle, it will not peg at least not right away. On (any)the road it pegs and stays there.

I see no sign of boiling at all.

Is there a test to see if the water/engine temperature is reasonably normal? If it is it is just a case of gauge or sensor problems.
