Possible problems using OD in 3rd gear? 200 1984

If you genuinely bypassed the relay so as to always power the solenoid, then -- YES -- this is dangerous. Believe it or not, the OD will try to engage in reverse, and this can ruin it.

It would be far better to find the wire to the 4th gear switch and ground it. Then, at least, you have control over the OD using the pushbutton. That is, the relay functions and thinks you're always in 4th gear.

I used to do this in my '75 and enjoyed having 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears all with OD. Nothing ever broke, and the gear ratios were sometimes better that way.

Be thoughtful with the button and gentle with the gas.
