I suppose it would work that way with a generator but NOT with an
alternator; that is the alternator won't run like a motor.
I think the diode is probably simpler than the cutout (which also
constitutes one part of a generator regulator).
I have had SEV/Motorola regulators get their points welded together but
if I remember right it didn't run the battery down, it just didn't charge
very well. It makes contact when it is charging too much and shorts out the
field.
