As Bill stated, it may be the Hall effect pick up, but it can also the the Power Stage, or the Hall effect connector on the distrubutor may be hanging by it's wires which may be shorted. If that is the case, you can buy the pieces reasonably at Volvo and repair it yourself. If the Hall effect connector is bad and you can't find the part numbers, post again and I'll find the information in the archives.
