How to paint faded chiped paint.

I want to sell our 1990 765TI (this is not an ad). It has some paint problems that I'd like to resolve before selling it to someone. The paint on the hood and roof is faded and the clear coat is chipped. What steps should I take to repair the paint? Should I sand off the clear coat or use rubbing compound to remove the chipped clear coat? Do I need to buy an air compressor/paint gun or will paint cans be just as good?
