I have had success using a hammer and a section of 3/4" brass rod. Use PB Blaster or Kroil to soak for a day before attempting to remove it. It is also important to work your way around on the available tabs so as not to put all your effort at one point.
It is easiest to cut off the clamp on the fuel line that comes off of the top and then just replacing it with a new one. I forget how the later cars are set up but on our 82 turbo that I did last week I had to cut the steel line above the rear axle. The fitting had rusted to the line. Cutting the line and then splicing in a piece of 5/16" line seemed easiest for me.
The short section of hose on the prepump is 3/8" if you want to have it on hand before pulling the unit out. I replaced the prepump on the 82 with one for the 740. The 740 prepump is a little different but no real problem. I simply added a hose clamp to the prepump to act as a ridge that was missing on the 740 prepump. The 740 prepumps are supposed to be a little better design (volume?).
Before going to all the trouble of removing the sending unit check to see if it might be just the ground for the prepump. With all the rust in that area they can be problematic.
