Turning the distributor should change what portion of the electrode gets the spark, but that's about it, within range.
A couple weeks ago I was attempting the knock-on-the-block test of the knock sensor (on my 89). Though I was looking to see the spark timing retard, I do seem to remember it being something less than 12 degrees BTDC before whacking it. And whacking it did nothing, realizing the light is only looking at one of every four sparks.
Always had a suspicion about the timing marks on those two-part damper assemblies...
