To diagnose a bad coolant sensor you'll need some diagnostic info:

Its my thought that the best practice to check sensor readings is to pull off the big multiplug at the computer and check it there (consulting a wiring diagram to determine the proper terminals). That way you check both the sensor and the wiring. If it doesn't seem right check again at the sensor to see if it or the wiring is the problem.
