The times I've chased an elusive vacuum leak, I've found that a 4' piece of clean fuel hose works great as a stethoscope. One end in the ear, the other end to snoop around under the manifold, etc.

If you choose dirty fuel hose, you'll suffer from the dreaded "DES." (Dirty ear syndrome.)
