Timing gear question 120-130

I was totally pissed when I replaced my timing gear on my 164.

The thing had been running great then on the freeway I noticed that
the car did funny things whenever I changed the throttle position.
Once I got home, the car didn't run without making a terrifying clanking
noise.

I pulled off the timing gear cover and discovered pieces of timing
gear. Lucky me in getting home.

I went to napa, got an aluminum gear set, installed it and turned
the car on. For the first 5-10 seconds the car made a super cool
whining noise but it quieted down quickly. I was bummed out since the
whining noise was really fun.
