If you can't get the seal changed right away, at least check the fluid level (I used a bent piece of coathanger) & top it off til you can get it done.
FWIW, I attempted to replace my pinon seal myself, but wasn't able to get enough leverage on the nut to break it loose. I had the car up on ramps, and was using a long pry bar as a counterhold.
Labor at my indy shop was about $70, I think. If you can make the counterhold tool described in the FAQ, or can raise the rear end of the car up enough to really move around underneath (or have an impact wrench, I guess), it's a pretty easy DIY.
