I'd just add here: if you're seeing problems while the engine is cold, I would suspect the control pressure regulator (warm-up regulator) and not the oxygen sensor or lambda unit. The factory oxygen sensor on a 1980 Volvo doesn't have a heater so it won't function while the engine is cold.
Assuming the wires between the o2 sensor and control unit are okay, and assuming you don't know how old the o2 sensor.. replace it. They're about $25. A rebuilt CPR is about $100 (minus the core charge).
