Tricked? 140-160 1975

No longer have a 164, but my wife's first car was a '75 164E, bought in a "swap" deal with a friend who wanted the M410 for his '75, we got the automatic version (We didn't know any better back then). Those cars are long gone now, but the same friend now has another better, beautiful '75 164E which he's just about finished getting to be a driveable classic. It's nearly show quality if you ask me, just took a bit of extra mechanical work and then, it won't win any awards for originality- stock outside but lots of 240 upgrades inside. The '75 is a great starting point, because essentially, it's already a 240 from the windshield back. Here's the stuff we did over the years:

240 turbo wheels (Virgos) and 195/60-15 tires. Also used 240GL wheels for a bit, and some other odd 5-spoke 262C(?) wheels. Any RWD wheels fit.

240 Turbo, GLT or GT rear sway bars.

Upgrade rear lights to 6-panel on cars with 4-panel lights. Add/replace all rear edge corner trim, fender edge trim. Added a small wing to the rear decklid (for a while).

Added power antenna in rear quarter (some had front fender mounted antennas?)

Added 240 GL power mirrors. Those 164 mirrors SUCK anyway- the silvering always falls off.

Added power locks- I recall a problem with the rear doors hinge strap catching the lock motor actuator rod and bending it into a "C"- may have to change door stops for 240 style. This all was 10-15yrs ago....

Added rear power windows (they all have fronts) and the accessory center console switches for the rear mirrors- that is a little pod that goes on top of the parking brake cover. Switches are same as fronts. LAter switched out entire interior for late 240GL interior with square power window armrests + PW switches.

Added "factory" Hella fog light kit- nice upgrade to replace the horn grills.
Added chrome headlight rings (hard to find now!)
Changed seats for late 240GL velour- nice improvement
One of us tried an "R-sport" gauge package, without complete success but it did look cool.
They are pretty cool cars and definitely nice for their time.
If you know anyone looking for a rust free '74 164E, call Eurocars Plus at (860) 444-2001.
