Be alert to the image file type. A "bmp" or "tiff" file type will consume tons of storage -- they save a great quality picture, but at the expense of memory. However, most good cameras today also save in the "jpg" or jpeg format (a format created by the Joint Photographic Experts Group about 15 or more years ago).

Image management programs, such as Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, Corel Draw, and others, will open all the dozens of formats and allow you to re-save your image in any other format. A distinct advantage of the jpeg format is that you can compress the image data file, although as you reduce the file size, you also lower the image quality.

If you look again at my "I LOVE MY VOLVO" image, you'll see blue smudgy noise in the white letters -- this results from the high image compression that I used when I scanned 'n saved the file.
