Stereo Installation 700 1991

I think the point here is that his headunit is 1.5 DIN sized. Normally, when you install a non-Volvo stereo in a 740, it is DIN sized and you need a mounting frame. However, this won't work with a 1.5 DIN hu. I have never done it although it can obviously be done. The only question is, how good does it have to lock. There will be no factory made (Volvo or non-Volvo) mounting frames. I doubt your average car stereo installer would be able to help you. I have a few ideas myself though:

1, The Volvo mounting frame that takes the stock Volvo radios for a 740 and that are larger than 1 DIN, are they 1.5 DIN or larger? If so, you could use that. Now, a Volvo stock radio is at a backward angle so you will need to modify this frame with a top cover or similar.

2, Go to a scrapper and find a 960 or V/S90 with the latter type radio console. These are one large frame with two trays, a lighter with small tray next to it and then an smaller ashtray. The two top trays can be pulled out and then you have a 2 DIN opening which can take a 2 DIN hu with a normal face, not one leaning backwards. See what I mean? Use this to make a neater fit for youur 1.5 DIN stereo. You will need to chop the ahstray off or move your fuse board and then make a cover.

I think it could be done looking quite stock if you are the handy sort of person with access to good materials and some imagination.
