Hello,
I did a tune on my 66 122s but I'm having issues. First I:
- replaced the points/rotor adjusted to about .018 (in between .016 nd .018)
- Adjusted the valves incorrectly - I think read the manual wrong and set it to .018 - .020
- Then tried to set the timing statically using Rons method.
Started nicely at first. Went for a test drive and was hearing what sounds like popping from the exhuast when I slow down in gear and at idle. Then it became very hard to start so I borrowed a timing light and saw that my timing was actually at about 8 degrees, not the 16 degrees I was expecting. The dwell was at about 40 so I decided to start over.
- set timing to ~17 degrees - It jumps around a little and it might be missing. The strobe from the light seems to miss a little.
- set the points to .016 - dwell is now at 50
- Reset the valves to ~.017 in between .016 and .018 - this was done cold
- readjusted carbs - all the way up then back ~9 flats.
Now it starts (hard when cold ~50F) but idles very rough and I am hearing the pop from the exhaust. It runs good though when I'm driving. Accelerates OK, no popping when I slow down.
I am going to look at the timing and dwell again today (ran out of light yesterday). Also the spark plugs look OK and are set to .030
Any clues on the rough start/idle and pop?
Thanks
Shane
