Next time you have the valve cover off you might check the valve lift
and see if they all lift the same amount. The popping could be an
exhaust valve that is not opening (worn cam) so the stuff has to
come back out the intake.

That is what has caused the worst popping in my experience. Took me a LONG
time to figure out what it was.
