I think that the input shaft on the various motor/transmission
configurations is different. I remember reading that when doing
a diesel -> B21/B23/B230 conversion you need to source a different
bellhousing (obvious) and a different transmission as well since
the output shaft on one is two or more inches longer than the
other.
I think what this really means is that someone with lots of money
needs to source a VR6 motor, a D24 bellhousing and a couple of
M46s from different motors (B27/B28/B280, B21/B23/B230 and D24)
and see which combo works the best.
I still think the easiest switch for maximum power would be to
put a turboed 2.3 4cyl from a merkur or svo mustang or a turbo
thunderbird. Lots of cheap good 5speed transmissions, low weight,
lots of aftermarket parts, and huge power potential if you bump
up the boost.
