"...slightly retarding the timing resolved the high HC readings." This is a trick that seems to guarantee passing the tests. I'll bet the vacuum leak had the opposite effect if it was high in HC.

As to the injector testing, one of the books has a picture of four clear graduated cylinders with injectors stuck in them to test pattern and volume. I think for most of us this it is peanut butter jars.
