If you said "any screws securing the back of the unit" meaning the radio space you were in fact correct. After straightening the tabs on the metal that surrounds the radio and removing that piece there is a screw at the top back of the plastic "box" that isolates the radio space. Removing that screw allows the box to be removed. That exposes four (10mm head) bolts that hold a fairly heavy bracket in place. The two tabs at the bottom of the climate control assembly are part of that bracket. Once that bracket was removed the control assembly came right out. It also helped to remove the ashtray and storage compartment as though I was trying to access the relay tray.
