Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.
In addition to replacing the relay switch and cleaning the fuse connections, I just replaced the 25 amp blade fuse under the hood. The old one did look a little corroded.
What happened then might be described as some improvement. When I turned the ignition, she turned over and I was even able to rev the engine, but when I come off the gas she dies out again. When I turned her over again, and pressed the gas, she reved a little but then there was a knocking sound from the front right side of the car somewhere and she died out again.
That sounds like blockage to me, but again I'm a really a new comer to the weekend mechanic world. I have to confess that I still don't really understand the instructions on how to replace the fuel filter.

Where exactly is it located and what does it look like? Does the wagon have to be lifted at least on blocks to do this replacement?
