With traditional points ignition, the dwell time is determined by the points gap. With electronic ignition (either optical or points input), the dwell time is determined electronicly and the switching time is faster than with traditional points, generating a better spark. The ultimate is capacitive discharge ignition, but the disadvantage is complexity and the tendency for the wrong plug to fire due to induced voltages if ignition cables run close to each other.
