You're lucky to have a standard size lamp. Any auto parts store (Auto Zone et al.) have drop in replacements that take H4 bulbs.

I would isolate the harness and place relays closer to the front of the car and heavier guage wire.

Am trying to figure out how to retrofit a similar arrangement in my 91 744.

Just my $0.02.
