For several years, Volvo sold an "L" shaped tailpipe (maybe for the turbo or the GT models, I don't really know). They discharged exhaust gasses about 8"-10" closer to the center of the car. I used them on several cars and noticed a significant buildup of cruddy, black carbon residue on the bumper. One car was a wagon, and I could smell considerably more exhaust odor (it tended to leak slightly past the t-gate gasket).
By using the "S" shaped pipe, the gasses are discharged closer to the outer edge of the car where they are picked up by the slipstream, which is more turbulent. The exhaust is less likely to be sucked back into the car.
My experience and opinion only.
