Well, it will work, but it isn't an easy fix. Did it for both of my 86 taillights. Bought the older taillight before I realized that they weren't direct replacements. Swithed the circuit board from old to new. All the lights work Ok on this except for the brake lights. In order to fix it you'll have to take the bulb holders out of the old taillights and fit them into the brake light hole. The problem there is that the little tabs that fit into the holes don't fit correctly between the two. What I had to do was to experiment with the placement of the bulb holder on the circuit board, and then I made a strap to hold the bulb holder in place. Crude, but it works.
The other alternative is to leave the original circuit board on the replacement taillight lenses and try to figure out how to "rewire" the way the wires go to the circuit board to light the appropriate lights
