I believe it was the 80's and it involved a monster truck. Other vehicles had their roof pillars notched so they would crush further.
FWIW, the test stack was redone on David Horowitz's Fight Back. In Sweden, they went up to 9 cars, and on putting the 10th, a gust of wind blew ... and well, you can imagine what happened. Naturally, gravity dictated that the higher cars would sustain a lot more damage, and they did, but the passenger cages were indeed still intact.
In the US, a test was performed more safely with a 6-ton Coca-Cola truck instead. It passed.
