FedEx Ground is the way to go. I've not had any experience with their freight division yet, but I have found that Forward Air (www.forwardair.com/index.htm ) and ABF (www.abfs.com) are the cheapest. To build a cheap crate for it, swipe an old palatte from behind the supermarket and build some structure to attach the transmission to, holding it upright (like it is in the car, not on its end) and protecting the tender solenoid. They do not have to be fully enclosed.
