There seems to be a lot of these problems lately!
You say that the tach was jumping but no spark was evident. Can't be the ECU or power stage because the tach would be dead. This points to the HT wiring (dist to coil particularly)or the coil. You can test the coil by powering it directly, momentarily, with a plug connected to it.
