Air Box Foam - conspiracy or function? 700 1990

I just replaced the AMM on my 744T - (previous posts about random "limp mode") - and replaced the air filter while I had the air box open - problem fixed.

The foam lining had not yet started to fragment, but once deformed, didn't return to shape. I removed all of it - didn't want to smoke the new AMM with "flying foam". So, what were the R&D people at Volvo thinking - what's is the (supposed) purpose of the foam? The car doesn't seem louder, and thermal insulation... I guess another question is, is it OK to run without it, and if not, where to get replacement material... Thanks.
