Air Box Foam - conspiracy or function? 700 1990

My understanding is that the foam is simply there to muffle the sound of air being sucked in. Some people think it actually restricts airflow. I don't think any harm has even been done to a Volvo by removing it. The previous owner removed it on my car and i've been driving for 3 years without it.
