IMO a Volvo diesel isn't worth it unless you're preparing to learn all about it. Unlike the redblocks, the learning curve is fairly steep and requires a hefty (one-time) investment in tools.
Even then, if you're going for an (in the US) esoteric diesel, go for the Peugeot. You can't beat the ergonomics (and the wagons give Volvos a run for their money), and the diesels that we got in the US were all reputed to be pretty reliable.
If you want something more common, go for an MBZ diesel (altho these are usually way overvalued).
IMO the diesel isn't very Volvo-like, and while there's nothing wrong with that.. if you're looking for a Volvo-like diesel, you're barking up the wrong tree.
