78 245 trailing arm problem 200 1978

I recently (unsuccessfully) tried to change the trailing arm bushings on my 78 245. I've since given up and am trying to put it back together. The trailing arm seems to be too short now, I can attach either the front or rear part of the arm, but not both. I've tried both with and without the shock absorber, and I've also removed the spring completely from the arm. Am I missing something here or did I just bend it?
