Lucid's post is pretty complete. Basically for charging problems it's essential that you have a multimter to help in locating the problem. Start by seeing if the dash lights are on and off when they're supposed to be then checking the voltage at the battery with the car off then on. etc.
Mechanics don't like to chase electrical probs. because each car has its own wiring setup.
As for rust and expense. Most of us seem to be DIYers. 240's are relatively easy to work on, but that requires time and tools. After a bit of a learning curve, which because of 240 durability can be extended, things go smoother and cheaper.
