Following up on your measurements, it looks to be truly a shoe horn job. I would expect that much of the transmission tunnel would have to be cut out and resized to retain any maintenance clearances (much like that Buick v6 conversion). Another guy on the list mentioned fiberglas front clips--that might help some. I wonder if a guy could run downpipes outside the frame rails and down the outside perimeter?
In passing, I might mention that I saw a pic of a 544 v8 conversion underway in Eugene, Oregon. He mentioned that the motor was a "hemi"---all I can say is that I have no idea how that fellow is cramming a hemi head Chrysler motor in there. As I recall (very foggily, I admit), none of the hemi's were small block motors (although I have a lot of respect for the old 318's and their stroked progeny).
