I've done an auto to manual swap twice, on an 1800E and a 145e. In both cases it wasn't terribly difficult, and the results were quite satisfying. If you don't have access to a complete parts car, however, tracking down the odds-n-ends parts can be very difficult.

But perhaps he is insinuating that you might (in general) be better off selling your auto car as is and buying a manual car in similar condition for a similar cost.
