Armitage:
Behind the temp gauge is a a small chiplike board known as the temperature compensation board. You have to remove the instrument panel to get to it. It is supposed to stabilize the circuit but is nortorious for causing erratic temp gauge readings. Sometimes removing it to clean the contacts restores it to normal operation, sometimes it has to be replaced. I have read on this Brickboard that pin #1 can be jumped to pin #3 to bypass the thing altogether. This sounds reasonable and like the best solution of all but I have never done this myself and cannot attest to the results. I was lucky eneough to get away with just cleaning the contacts with emery paper,on my 88 245.
Good luck
