I did a search on "rope trick" for the forum and suprisingly didn't come up with much. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

My 91 745t 5spd is in my garage right now with the timming belt gone and everything off but the crankshft pully. Curse that bolt on the cranshaft pully!

My question is this, should I use my impact wrench on it or should I try the rope trick. I'm a bit shy of using either. I've heard that using an impact wrench can snap the crank and I'm concerned that the rope trick will put unique stress on the head bolts which they were not designed.

Has anyone ever had actual damage to the engine from either of these methods? I did the timming belt on my 1988 244 Sedan and was able to remove the crankshaft pully by putting the car in grear and having a buddy hold the brakes firm. I don't want to do that again. The turning that it takes to pull up the driveline slack makes me run out of prybar swing. It's a pain.

Sorry to rehash a topic that may have been beaten to a pulp in the past.
