Here's how to easily check the coil:
1. Remove coil wire end from distrib cap
2. Insert a spark plug into the loose coil wire lead
3. Ground spark plug body
4. Check for 12 V to (+) side of coil
5. Disconnect/re-connect coil ground wire from (-) side of terminal. You should get a good blue spark each time you make and break the circuit if your coil is good.
If the coil is good, then either your points are wired up wrong or your distributor body is oriented wrong so the rotor is not pointing at a terminal when the points break, thus no spark.
To get the dist body oriented, do this:
1. Set #1 cylinder on the compresison stroke at the specified degrees BTDC.
2. Loosen dist clamp.
For following steps, "forward" is normal direction of rotation for the rotor; "backward" is the opposite
3. If the points are closed, rotate dist body backward until the points just start to open - use a test light or VOM to make sure.
4. If the points are open, rotate the dist body forward until they close, then backward until they just start to open.
Now the rotor direction and the points will be in synch.
