93 240 vs 88 240

Tough decision. From your previous post, the '93 sounds like a very clean car. The price sounds kind of high, but I'm located in the midwest and prices vary considerably from area to area. Maybe your region commands better pricing which means your '88 will be worth more also.

Gas milage will be a little lower with the auto tranny, but driving comfort might be a little better.

Check with kbb.com and edmunds.com for competitive pricing in your area and make a fair offer. It is very likely that the owner already checked and knows what the car is worth. If it is priced high, the owner will know it and be more agreeable to a fair offer. In terms of negotiating, try to find out why they are selling, how long it has been offered for sale, and when the tags and insurance are due.

A one owner car which is a real plus in my book, especially if it is in such great shape. Often people will let maintenance lapse when they are planning to sell a car. Does not sound like this is one of those cars. Check the maintenace records to be sure. You might find that it is due for brakes and a tune up and ..... Not much cost if you do it yourself, but not so for someone less qualified or inclinded to work on their own car. This can be a negotiating point as well.

Bottom line is you love the car and this is most likely going to be an emotional decision. I hope you can get it for a price you are comfortable with. You might ask the seller to agree to let you have the car checked out by an independent mechanic before closing the deal. AAA will do a very thorough job for a little over $100. Independent mechanic should be a little less. I consider this cheap insurance and have done it when buying cars in that price range. There is one other thing that could work in your favor. Based on how well they cared for this car, they will likely be more comfortable selling to someone who is going to love it as much as they do and who will continue the good care.
