I posted last week about a problem I was having here.
After locating all the parts for my rear wheel bearings and associated parts I set about installing everything tonight. Before I get much further, though, I wanted to be sure I am understanding the manual right. It seems that getting the axle shafts back in and backing plates on is really a two step process. As I understand it, the first step is to get the shafts in with the ends touching the backstop thing. Once both are in you can tap in or yank out the cones as needed to get the cones centered and the play to spec, which I think is 0.019, but my manuals are in the garage. The next step is to use the appropriate shims to make sure the backing plates just barely kiss the bearing cones to keep them in place.
The reason I am asking is that both cones protrude slightly from the axle tube. The axial play is spec and, as I understand it, I can carefully mic the distance from the top of the cone to the axle tube to determine the shims I need. Is this right? The manual makes it sound like you can determine necessary shims from the axial runout but that doesn't seem right with the cones proturding slightly as they are.
Anyway, any and all advice is appreciated. This is my first rear end experience ever and I'd like for it to be my last, too!
