What did I do this time? 200

"The battery light is on when I turn the key"
If the light is on, then the circuit is there (alt. is grounded and thin red wire is connected). But, the light should go off when you start the car. If it doesn't then the regulator brushes may be too short or making poor contact.

Get yourself a multimeter and measure the voltage at the batt with the car off (about 12v) and running (about 14v).
