Some thoughts on servicing drum brakes:
1. NEVER disassemble both sides at the same time when replacing the brake shoes. Unless you have a photographic memory, you will need to look at the unassembled side to figure out exactly when all the springs and other parts go and in what order. Don't ask me how I learned this!
2. When overhauling these brakes, dont be surprised when you find a leaking wheel cylindar. This is fairly common.
3. There are some inexpensive brake tools made for drum brakes. Get them, the job will go much better.
4. Usually the shoes wear into the drum and there will be a ridge on the outer, inside edge. If you don't back off on the shoe adjustment, you won't be able to pull the drum off.
5. When you are done with this job, you will really appreciate your Volvo disc brakes for more then their braking efficiency.
